Forum posts of Fireboard will always get automatically upgraded. The only thing you can do in addition for versions older than FB 1.0.5 is to run the fbconverter utility found here:

joomlacode.org/gf/project/fireboard/frs/

Simply install it and uninstall it. Nothing else needed. It will convert the file based settings into a database table as well, so the settings of FB survive the upgrade.

As for the upgrade of the forum: It is pretty straight forward (more will come in the release notes). Make a backup - simply uninstall FB (don't worry all messages, posts, categories and such will all stay inside the db) - now install Kunena. It will apply all necessary upgrades to the underlying data structures.

Same thing going forward. Once you are on Kunena and upgrade is as simple as this: backup - uninstall - install new version. All from within the Joomla backend, no need to run manual scripts or untar or copy stuff.

Since Kunena is growing with new images and future additions, please make sure your PHP timeout is set to 60-120s or the install might timeout with a bank screen.

Also make sure your system requirements match: PHP >= 4.3 mySQL >=5.0

Hope this helps!

I would recommend uninstalling all original modules for FB as the compatibility of the old modules are not guaranteed. Personally, I would start off clean as far as modules for the forum are concerned. There are old modules being ported or new modules being created every day so at some point most, if not all, modules that were available for FB will be available for Kunena.
