TOPIC: Group Jive Not So Private Forums

Group Jive Not So Private Forums 7 months, 1 week ago #1

Hi

Have just been notified that a Private Forum can still be accessed via:

1. Kunena Search & Advanced Search fields (by keyword), and

2. By the 'Show Latest Posts' link, (under welcome message) next to My Profile link etc

Groupjive integration is much simpler now but these loop holes with the Group 'Private forums' still exist.

Has anyone found this, and if so how can these windows to the private forum be removed?

Can the 'Show Latest Posts' and 'Advanced Search' Links be removed?

Not sure what to do about the normal Kunena Search box.
Anyone got any ideas on how to prevent it (and the Advanced Search) indexing the Private Groupjive forums?

Kind Regards

I just tried an experiment on one of my websites:
  1. I attempted to search for a phrase in a forum that I have made private and the search (standard and "advanced") failed to find it when I was not logged-in, but succeeded when I was logged-in.
  2. Similarly, if I am not logged-in to www.kunena.com the latest posts (in private forum that I have access to here) do not appear on the Recent Discussions tab unless I am logged in.
I think someone's telling you stories. Who notified you that this was the case? I don't understand what GroupJive has to do with this issue, but what do the folks there have to say about this?

There is no need to remove the 'Show Latest Posts' or 'Advanced Search' links based on hearsay. Prove it for yourself.

Thanks for response. I should have been clearer.
The issue I am referring to is to do with GroupJive (group component) and Kunena.

When groups are created in Groupjive it automatically creates a forum in Kunena to go with that group (if forum integration is required).

These group forums can either be made public / or private to non members.

The issue I have found myself, is that private groupjive forums (created in Kunena)can still be accessed by non members, from the 'show latest posts' and search functions of the main Kunena Forum on the website.

Hope that is clear now.

This is probably not a Kunena issue, more Groupjive, but someone else who uses this integration to create group forums, may find this post of interest.

Thanks

I know nothing about how GroupJive creates topics in a Kunena forum. They have their own support forum to answer those questions but, as you say, someone here may be interested. However, as a blanket statement about vanilla-flavoured, no-frills, out-of-the-box Kunena, the 'Show Latest Posts' or 'Advanced Search' links currently filter out private discussions from those who are not entitled to view them.

To the forum moderators: please move this discussion topic to Extensions, Modules, and Plugins

GroupJive does nothing else than it creates restricted forum and assigns a moderator to it. So by default nobody else than admins have access to the forum.

When user loads the forum first time, Kunena creates access list for all categories where user has access. It sends that list to GroupJive, which modifies that list.

What can go wrong is that the forum permissions are not right. Go to backend and verify that only admins have access to the category (first list should have empty value). You can also try to disable CB integration and look if you can access the forums then (they should be hidden).

Thanks Matias.

Did as suggested but no joy, but have a question that you may be able to help with.

In Kunena Administration, the categories created by GJ, under the 'Public access' column, are marked 'Public Frontend'. In the 'admin access' column, the same categries are marked 'Public Backend'.

Looking at the parameters, inside a category, the top select box, entitled 'Public Access Level', has no item marked 'Public Front end', whilst the bottom select box has an entry called 'Public Backend' (which is highlighted).

The sub category that I have added to the category created by GJ cannot be designated 'public frontend', because this option is not available.

I tried creating category again, leaving 'public access level' blank, as I think you suggested, but this made no difference.

The sub category was still visible in the Search and show latest posts pages. Not sure what I'm doing wrong?
  1. I created Groupjive Forum category in Kunena, to containe all GJ genearted forums.
  2. Next I disabled this forum and placed ID into Group jive integartion section.
  3. The GJ forums were created successfully under the disabled forum in Kunena - these appeared and worked in disabled state.
  4. I added sub catgory to one of the GJ generated forums- but these sub categories were only visible in the GJ Forum if they were 'enabled'- this led to them appearing in 'Search' and 'show latest posts'
In short, if sub categories are disabled (like all the GJ generated forums) they do not appear 'search' or 'show latest posts', but niether do they appear in the private forum, which defeats the purpose.

Any further help, would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Are you sure that you have set GJ to have only private groups? With public groups this is what I expect it to do..

There is one way to get private forum: changing pub_access field to 1 in phpmyadmin. I do not generally recommend doing this, but now there are no other choices.. I will mark this bug to be fixed to K1.6.

Do you mean by this that the Groupjive catgeory in Kunena (that contain all groupjive forums) is disabled...yes.

As I said, the main forum created by GJ is private. My concern is the sub-forum/category added to this private forum (in kunena (forum admin), which does not share the same privacy.

Will try
changing pub_access field to 1 in phpmyadmin
for the sub-catgegory of the private forum, to see if that fixes it, and get back to you.

Thanks laot for your suggestion.

Hi Have tried changing public_access field of groupjive sub forums as suggested:
changing pub_access field to 1 in phpmyadmin

but got no joy.

The result was that no registered members could see the sub-forums, that is, they could view their main private group forum, but could not see any sub forums created manually in Kunena's Forum Administration.

Back to the drawing board.
